Ecolab's $4.75 billion all-cash deal for CoolIT Systems builds one thermal platform for AI data centers.
21 Jul 2026

Artificial intelligence has made computing more powerful. It has also made it much hotter. As data centres fill with densely packed GPUs, cooling has become as important as processing power itself. That helps explain why Ecolab has agreed to buy liquid cooling specialist CoolIT Systems for $4.75 billion in cash, in a deal announced on March 20th 2026.
The acquisition brings together two complementary businesses. CoolIT supplies coolant distribution units, cold plates and direct-to-chip cooling systems designed for high-density AI servers. Ecolab contributes expertise in water treatment, chemistry and digital monitoring, allowing the combined firm to offer a broader thermal management platform. As FinancialContent observed, it is "the clearest indicator yet that the AI industry has officially outgrown its thermal envelope."
CoolIT is expected to generate about $550 million in revenue over the next 12 months, reflecting demand that has moved well beyond early experimentation. Liquid cooling, once viewed as a specialist technology, is becoming a practical necessity as traditional air-based systems struggle to dissipate the heat produced by advanced AI hardware.
Beyond the companies involved, the deal points to a wider shift in the data centre industry. Operators increasingly prefer integrated suppliers that can combine hardware, water management and real-time monitoring rather than assemble separate components from multiple vendors. Expected to close in the third quarter of 2026, the acquisition may influence how hyperscale and enterprise operators buy cooling infrastructure in the years ahead.
