AI’s Energy Appetite Gets a Battery Partner

VNET and CATL plan to pair computing infrastructure with zero-carbon energy, though individual projects still need final agreements.

Artificial intelligence needs computing power, and computing power needs energy. VNET Group and battery maker CATL are now planning to bring the two closer together.

Under a strategic cooperation agreement announced in Beijing on August 18, 2026, VNET’s large-scale computing infrastructure would be paired with CATL’s zero-carbon energy technologies. The aim is to serve AI and data-centre workloads while connecting their electricity demand more directly with lower-carbon supply.

The companies describe a three-layer system spanning gigawatt-scale compute-energy facilities, distributed networks and a zero-carbon token ecosystem. Each layer is meant to link computing capacity with the infrastructure that powers it, though the announcement offered few details on how the token element would operate.

VNET already runs data centres in more than 30 Chinese cities and serves over 7,000 enterprise customers. CATL’s batteries and energy-storage systems would provide the energy foundation, supported by green data-centre technology and direct connections to renewable power.

"By combining our complementary strengths and deepening cooperation across technology, infrastructure and supply chains, we will jointly advance innovation in integrated compute-energy systems," said Josh Sheng Chen, Founder and Executive Chairperson of VNET. The ambition is broad, but the commercial detail remains thin.

No financial value was disclosed, and individual projects still depend on the negotiation and execution of definitive agreements. The strategic framework therefore sets a direction without yet fixing the cost, scale or timetable of specific developments.

Investors responded to more immediate numbers. VNET shares fell after the announcement, following a wider-than-expected second-quarter earnings miss and reported delays in the CATL transaction.

The partnership brings together two established infrastructure businesses around one of AI’s central constraints. For now, however, the proposed compute-energy network remains a plan whose individual projects still need contracts of their own.
