Limelight buys Edgio's core CDN assets for $130M, betting sustainability now decides who wins streaming contracts
10 Aug 2026

Limelight Networks has agreed to acquire Edgio’s core content delivery network assets for $130mn, marking one of the larger CDN consolidations of 2026. The deal comes as streaming platforms seek to control infrastructure costs and reduce the emissions associated with digital content delivery.
With the acquisition, Limelight will gain additional points of presence and established carrier relationships that would otherwise take years to build. Bob Lyons, the company’s chief executive, said the acquisition strengthens the company’s position in sustainable edge computing for streaming, as environmental performance becomes a consideration alongside latency and uptime.
Demand for carbon-aware delivery is also growing. The approach routes content through data paths with lower associated emissions, adding another measure for customers assessing CDN suppliers. For Limelight, the enlarged network could support high-volume streaming customers without requiring energy consumption to rise at the same rate.
AI-driven video processing and real-time personalisation are adding to the cost and complexity of CDN operations. Smaller networks may struggle to finance the hardware and software upgrades needed for these workloads, increasing pressure for consolidation across the sector.
For customers, a larger network could offer more routing options and support lower-emission delivery. Whether sustainability becomes a standard requirement in CDN contracts remains an open question as streaming and AI workloads continue to increase demand for edge infrastructure.
